What is the Purpose of the Autism Research Institute?

A worldwide network of parents and professionals who share their concerns can be found within The Autism Research Institute, or ARI, which was founded in the year 1967 and works to conduct research about autistic disorders and to find new ways to improve treatment and prevention. The ARI is a wealth of information. There are over 40,000 case histories that have been collected over the years about autistic children from 60 different countries.

Autism causes problems with behaviour, communication and social skills. People with the disorder may have abnormalities in the way the brain developed that causes the behavioural quirks associated with it. But there are some people who believe it should not be classified as a mental disorder, arguing that autistic people are simply at the extreme end of a behavioural scale.

It has been confirmed through various tests, experiments and researches that there is a genetic link to the susceptibility of a child to suffer from autism, although the link itself has not been determined. The Refrigerator Mother idea was postulated at one time also, suggesting that bad parenting may have caused the disorder in some way. This was greatly misleading at the time, and was rather overwhelming for several families.

What Signs Can Help Parents Diagnose Children With Autism?

A lot of time and research is being put into learning about development in children with autism, because unfortunately, the number of children who are developing symptoms of autism is increasing. However, children who are autistic do not all show the same developmental delays, such as impaired social skills, nor do the delays show up at the same times. Most autistic children start showing their first signs before they reach the age of 3.

Surviving Teenage Autism
